Music has a long and diverse history as a tool of healing. It has been referenced in the writings of Aristotle and in ancient African rock paintings. But only recently has its ability to sooth and rejuvenate the human spirit been applied in medical settings, including cancer treatment.
Now, music therapy is being used in a variety of treatment settings where individuals listen to music as well as take part in musical activities. The documented and evidence-based benefits of music therapy include relaxation, mood enhancement and an improvement in overall quality of life. As a result, PCI includes music therapy as an important and growing part of our Integrative Oncology services.
Our efforts to provide this program to cancer patients is currently being carried out under the vision of Robert Ellis and the direction of Greg Gernon who has implemented music therapy in all three PCI locations.
