A hospital physician specialist - called a 'hospitalist' - manages the acute care needs of inpatients during their hospital stay. The hospitalist works with the patient and their primary care physician or specialty physician to coordinate care until the patient leaves the hospital. There are several advantages to having a hospitalist manage your care:
- Hospitalists are generally internal medicine, family medicine physicians and advance practice providers who have acquired particular expertise in the evaluation and management of the common medical conditions that lead to hospital admission of adult patients.
- Because hospitalists are on site around the clock, they are able to closely monitor a patient's condition and make treatment, testing or medication adjustments quickly.
- The hospitalist is available to answer questions and communicate with the patient's family.
- When discharged, the hospitalist will coordinate care with the patient's primary care physician to ensure a seamless transition back to outpatient care.
