Mike Rowe, Executive Director
In July 2015, Mike Rowe became the Executive Director of Patriots Colony. His career in health care has spanned more than 30 years and included an early stint as a Captain in the Medical Service Corps of the U.S. Air Force. After serving in the Air Force, Mr. Rowe returned to school to earn a master's degree in Health Care Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University and the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, and he served in senior executive positions for health care organizations across the East Coast, from Florida to Maryland.
Steve Hornsby, Director of Marketing
Steve Hornsby is a graduate of Virginia Tech University. He has been with Patriots Colony for nearly seven years. Prior to his role as Patriots Colony's director of marketing, he served in sales and marketing at the corporate headquarters for Ferguson Enterprises. Mr. Hornsby also brings over a decade of experience from John Hancock Financial Solutions, where he worked extensively with military officers to help them plan for retirement through estate and long-term care planning.
As an avid golfer, he is the founder of the College Prep Golf Tour, a junior golf tour that creates a launching pad for junior golfers to play in college. Well over 100 junior golfers have gone on to play in college thanks to the tour.
Steve and his wife, Pam-a Poquoson native and graduate of the University of Virginia-live in Williamsburg. Their son will soon graduate from dental school, and their daughter will soon graduate from James Madison University.
Karl Keffer, Health Care Administrator
Karl Keffer has been a licensed administrator for 28 years and has worked for various companies, most recently a 120-bed facility in Emporia, Virginia. He has lived in Newport News his whole life. In fact, Mr. Keffer's father was a Riverside physician for 40 years, and his mother was a nurse. That explains why he enjoys his field: "It's all I've ever known," he says. Outside of work, Mr. Keffer spends time with his wife, their dog and two cats.
Doug Bowling, Director of Facilities
Doug Bowling attended Thomas Nelson Community College. He has enjoyed 30 years of successful facility maintenance, including managing an AAA four diamond property. Mr. Bowling holds a Virginia Class A license with a build designation. His professional memberships and affiliations include ASHE, NFPA and CERT. A lifelong resident of the Virginia Peninsula, he currently resides in Williamsburg.
Tammy Johnson, Director of Assisted Living
Tammy Johnson earned her bachelor's degree in nursing from Hampton University. In her 16 years as a nurse, she has gained experience in medical surgery, case management and pediatric psychiatry. She has worked with older adults in long-term care since 2007. Driven by compassion, Ms. Johnson is very enthusiastic about providing Patriots Colony residents with quality care and services. She lives in Newport News with her husband and two children.
Shelly Diggs, Director of Nursing
Shelly Diggs has been a nurse since 2004. In 2015, she graduated suma cum laude with her bachelor's degree in nursing. She is a Certified Medical Surgical Registered Nurse (CMSRN). With a board certification in gerontology, Ms. Diggs has a true passion for working with senior adults.
Chris McHose, Director of Physical Therapy
Chris McHose joined the Patriots Colony's rehab department in 2003. He assisted with the Medicare accreditation process for skilled nursing, the accreditation and launch of outpatient rehab at Patriots Colony and the development and accreditation of the rehab program at Sanders Retirement Community. Mr. McHose previously worked with Riverside Pediatric Therapies in early intervention.Mr. McHose's interests include cycling, cooking, entertaining and spending time with his wife and two children. Now living in Williamsburg, he moved frequently during childhood and can relate to the military lifestyle.
