Fact. Six out of every 10 falls happen at home, according to the National Institute on Aging.

Home, after all, is where we spend most of our time. It’s where you’ve chosen to remain as you age with the support of ChooseHome and it’s where we tend to move around comfortably, not often thinking about safety. But many falls can be prevented with simple adjustments.

Consider these tips to “fall-proof” your home and life this season as we head into fall and winter.

Inside the Home

Remove anything that can cause you to slip or trip while walking. Think clutter on the stairs, small pieces of furniture, electric and phone cords or throw rugs. Can’t remove a throw rug? Be sure to secure it using non-slip pads or double-sided tape.

Install light switches at the top and bottom of stairways. Ensure you have a good lamp next to your bed and a flashlight in the nightstand.

Arrange furniture to provide plenty of room to walk freely.

Add a rubber mat to the floor of bathrooms and showers.

Remove items from stairs and consider non-slip strips on each step.

Look around the kitchen. Arrange cabinets and storage areas to keep frequently used food boxes, cans, dishes and other everyday items within easy reach.

Outside the Home

Virginia may not see a lot of snow and ice during the winter, but when it does arrive, avoid walking outside alone on slick sidewalks or porch stairs. If you do have to walk outside, even with a partner, be sure to wear boots.

Stock sand in your garage to have at the ready should snow or icy weather arrive.

Ensure the lighting outside on walkways, entryways, decks and patios is bright.
