About Suraj Rajan, MD

Dr. Rajan is a board-certified, fellowship-trained neurologist specializing in movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, essential tremors, dystonias, tics, Huntington disease, and Tourette syndrome. He is experienced in managing deep brain stimulation selection and programming, as well as Botox injections for neurological disorders and nerve blocks of the head and neck. In addition to movement disorders, Dr. Rajan also has a special interest in ataxia (balance disorder), as well as memory disorders including Alzheimer’s dementia, frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD), primary progressive aphasia, normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), and other neurodegenerative disorders.

After completing medical school in India, Dr. Rajan earned his Master of Science in clinical neurology and subsequent research fellowship from the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology in London. Following an internship with the University of Missouri he completed his neurology residency at Wright State University before pursuing subspecialty fellowship training in movement disorders at Johns Hopkins University. He currently also serves as an adjunct assistant professor in neurology with Johns Hopkins University. He is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

Dr. Rajan enjoys the long-term relationships he forges with his patients as he helps them navigate their neurological disorders over time. His goals are to combine bedside diagnostic skills with advanced testing and therapeutics centered on each patient’s needs. He believes healthcare is a team effort, shaped by each patient’s needs. As new discoveries and novel treatments emerge, he believes it is exciting to see how diseases in his field are recast. Dr. Rajan likes to teach patients about their disease and conditions and encourages his patients to take notes.

Originally from the coastal town of Kerala, India, Dr. Rajan is glad to be back near the water and seafood. Away from work, he enjoys sketching, painting, hiking and spending time with his nephew and niece.

Dr. Suraj was very patient with me and he explained to me everything that was needed during this visit. He encouraged continued participation in social activities. And explained what my family and I should look for as my diagnosis progresses. He did this in easy to understand terms.

Dr Rajan was very responsive to my explanation of new symptoms which he believes are side effects of one medication, so he advised a dosage change with a 4-week report to him on results.
