About Kara Elizabeth Friend, MD

Dr. Friend earned her medical degree in 2008 from Eastern Virginia Medical School, where she also completed a general surgery residency and surgical critical care fellowship. She went on to complete a breast oncology fellowship at the University of Michigan in 2015. Dr. Friend is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery in general surgery and surgical critical care. She is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

On her second case as a surgical resident, Dr. Friend’s patient cried with relief when she walked into the room—she wanted a female surgeon but hadn’t been able to find one. This inspired Dr. Friend to specialize in breast surgery. Believing that breast cancer should not define a person’s life, her hope is to make the journey from diagnosis to treatment as stress-free and simple as she can. Her door is always open, both medically and personally. Though she welcomes family members to be part of discussions, Dr. Friend always defers to her patient for final decisions.

With a research focus in early-onset breast cancer and HER2-positive breast cancer, Dr. Friend has multiple publications in national medical journals and a significant amount of clinical teaching experience. She offers oncoplastic techniques such as nipple-sparing mastectomy, local tissue rearrangement and direct-to-implant reconstruction. Dr. Friend also offers counseling and surgery options to patients at high risk for developing breast cancer, such as those with BRCA mutations.

After growing up in Northern Virginia, Dr. Friend moved to our area to attend the College of William & Mary and EVMS. Since then, she has considered Hampton Roads her home, enjoying its simultaneous small-town feel and big-city opportunities. An avid supporter of the arts, Dr. Friend enjoys local theatre, adventurous food and new restaurants. She has three rescue dogs, affectionately called her “Neapolitan herd.” Their names are Mina Barker, Emma Night and Jon Snow.
