About Dimitrios Pousios, MD
Dimitrios Pousios, M.D., is a board-certified, fellowship trained cardiothoracic surgeon who specializes in open-heart surgeries. In addition to procedures such as coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), he has a special interest in structural heart surgeries, including mitral valve repair and replacement, transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and multivalve heart surgery.
Dr. Pousios earned his medical degree from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece. He completed residencies in general surgery at the Army General Hospital and the University of Athens Medical School, both located in Athens. While in Athens, he finished a thoracic surgery residency at Sotiria Thoracic Diseases Hospital and a cardiac surgery residency at the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Centre, followed by a clinical fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at University Hospital Southampton in the United Kingdom. He is board certified by the European Board for Cardiothoracic Surgery.
Dr. Pousios believes in shared decision-making and building trust between patients and physicians. He is dedicated to being accessible to his patients and providing as much time as necessary to ensure they understand their treatment.
When he’s not working, Dr. Pousios enjoys studying history and playing tennis. As a retired medical officer with the Greek Army holding the rank of Lt. Colonel, he appreciates the military community and the natural beauty of the coastal Virginia area.
