About Celestine Oshiobughie Maiki, MD
Gastroenterology
Dr. Maiki is a board-certified, fellowship-trained general gastroenterologist with three decades of experience caring for patients in communities across the U.S. He earned his medical degree from the University of Lagos in his home country, Nigeria, where he studied on a prestigious Merit Scholarship from the government of his home state.
After medical school, Dr. Maiki dedicated himself to community service, first as a physician to the National Football team of Nigeria and then as a volunteer medical officer in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district.
He moved to New York City to complete his internal medicine residency at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, Harlem Hospital Center. He then trained as a Gastroenterology and Hepatology Fellow at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, Connecticut.
Dr. Maiki’s decision to pursue gastroenterology stems from personal experience and the strong sense of service he inherited from his family. As a child growing up in Nigeria, the youngest child of his mother in a middle-class family, he suffered from common gastrointestinal and infectious diseases like malaria, worm infestations, diarrheal diseases and dysentery. Gastroenterology presented an opportunity to help other people experiencing these maladies.
Dr. Maiki joined Riverside after practicing gastroenterology and conducting some clinical research for 17 years in Metro Atlanta. He has also practiced in Alabama, Arizona and Florida. He treats all gastroenterology conditions, offering procedures and interventions, including upper endoscopies and colonoscopies. His philosophy aligns with Riverside’s mission “to care for others as we would care for those we love,” and he believes that his patients’ needs should always come first.
Married with four grown children, Dr. Maiki is passionate about traveling. He has visited 42 states in the U.S. and every continent apart from Australia and Antarctica. A former collegiate volleyball and basketball player, he continues to enjoy a wide range of sports. He also frequently attends music concerts and arts and crafts festivals, and believes in working hard and living life to the fullest.
