About Baochan Nguyen, MD

Chan Nguyen, M.D., Ph.D., has joined the team of ophthalmologists, optometrists and staff providing the most comprehensive eye care in Hampton Roads. Hampton Roads Eye Associates (HREA), a division of Riverside Medical Group, welcomes a recognized professional in Dr. Nguyen, who believes in caring for patients as she would care for members of her own family.

Dr. Nguyen grew up in Oklahoma where she was a National Merit Scholar. Her medical degree and doctoral degree in Neuroscience are from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. Her residency training in ophthalmology was conducted at the Jules Stein Eye Institute at the University of California in Los Angeles. After completing her training, she returned to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center where she most recently served as the medical director of the Parkland Memorial Hospital Eye Clinic, as well as Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology and as Associate Residency Program Director.

Dr. Nguyen provides comprehensive ophthalmology care for a range of eye diseases, including cataract, pterygia, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. She brings a strong background that combines research and patient care to HREA. Dr. Nguyen has published more than a dozen studies covering many aspects of eye health.

“A patient’s vision is so valuable, and I wanted to be able to help patients who struggle with the health of their eyes,” she says. “I enjoy this specialty because it has allowed me to combine my love of microsurgery with the ability to deliver care that impacts my patients’ quality of life.”
