Understanding NSAIDs for Pain
NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) are a widely used treatment option for managing pain and inflammation. These medications help relieve discomfort caused by conditions like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome and sprains or strains. Unlike opioid pain relievers, NSAIDs do not cause drowsiness or dependence, making them a safer choice for long-term pain management.
How NSAIDs Work
NSAIDs work by reducing the production of prostaglandins, chemicals in the body that promote inflammation, pain, and fever. By blocking enzymes called COX-1 and COX-2, NSAIDs effectively decrease swelling and stiffness, allowing for improved function.
Types of NSAIDs for Pain
There are several types of NSAIDs, both over-the-counter and prescription-based, that can help relieve pain:
- Ibuprofen – Commonly used for mild to moderate pain and inflammation.
- Naproxen – Offers longer-lasting relief with fewer doses per day.
- Aspirin – Sometimes recommended for joint pain and inflammation.
- Prescription NSAIDs – Higher-strength options available if over-the-counter medications are not effective.
