Our Post-Graduate Year 1 Pharmacy Residency Program is split into core and elective rotations with highly qualified preceptors. You will join a cohort of four residents for a one year term, from July 1 until June 30.

Residents can expect to:

  • present formal lectures
  • present in-services
  • prepare a major research project
  • participate in the Pharmacy and Therapeutics committee process
  • present research at professional conferences

Residents begin by developing competency in pharmacy operations after orientation, including:

  • Epic
  • Pyxis
  • IV admixtures
  • clinical services
  • general inpatient pharmacy operations

Core rotations

  • pharmacy management
  • hospital pharmacy practice
  • internal medicine I
  • internal medicine II (cardiology or surgery)
  • critical care
  • oncology
  • ambulatory care

Elective rotations

  • antimicrobial stewardship
  • behavioral health (psychiatric medicine)
  • cancer infusion center
  • emergency medicine
  • geriatrics
  • long-term acute care
  • medication safety
  • neonatal intensive care
  • nephrology
  • service medicine
  • system pharmacy administration

Sharing knowledge

Each resident will be able to work with and mentor students from regional schools of pharmacy during certain rotations. As a community teaching hospital, Riverside Regional Medical Center provides the resident with the opportunity to attend many Grand Rounds as well as educational programs shared with medical residents.

Teaching and learning certificate

Riverside is partnered with the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Pharmacy to offer a Teaching and Learning Certificate. Residents will have the option to enroll in the program. This program consists of:

  • live seminars
  • development and delivery of didactic lectures
  • journal clubs
  • continuing education programs

Upon completion of the required elements, the resident is issued a program certificate at the conclusion of the residency year.

Meetings and travel

Each resident qualifies for 15 days paid time off plus professional travel reimbursement to attend and present at two meetings, including the Eastern States Conference for Pharmacy Residents and Preceptors and the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting, the largest gathering of pharmacists in the world, to be held in Las Vegas, Nevada (2019).
