Laura_KerbinNewport News, VA — Riverside Health System is pleased to announce that Laura Kerbin, M.D., has accepted the role of Medical Director, Hospice and Palliative Care Services. This is a new role within RHS, designed to improve the level of care provided to patients and their families by improving the tools, procedures and knowledge available to care givers on all levels.

Hospice care focuses on the physical, emotional, spiritual and social symptoms of terminally ill patients utilizing a team of professionals, trained volunteers and medical personnel. Hospice is designed to make the last days, week or months of life comfortable for the patient and the family, and provides bereavement care to family members after their loved one has passed.

Palliative care is also focused on the relief of suffering for patients but is appropriate for patients in all stages of diseases, including treatment for curable diseases as well as those who are chronically or terminally ill. Palliative care utilizes a multi-disciplinary approach to patient care relying on input from physicians, pharmacists, nurses, social workers, psychologists and other professionals to formulate the best plan of action.

In her new role, Dr. Kerbin will work closely with Riverside members Kyle Allen, M.D., Medical Director of Geriatrics and Lifelong Health, and Carol Wilson, Director of Palliative Care and Advanced Care Planning. She will also work with Riverside Health System Clinical Service Line teams and Administrative groups to enhance services that are already available by providing clinical leadership and cross-functional care coordination to focus on the continual enhancement of patient care.

Dr. Kerbin is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology, and Hospice and Palliative Medicine. She completed her residency at Eastern Virginia Medical School after finishing her Fellowship Program in Hematology and Medical Oncology at the Medical College of Virginia. She served previously as Medical Director for Hospice and Palliative Care of the Eastern Shore and as Medical Director of Sentara Hospice in Williamsburg.
