The Mayor of Newport News, McKinley L. Price, recognized six Riverside Regional Medical Center Volunteers with the 2014 Lifelong Citizenship Award on Sept. 16. The six volunteers are all over the age of 90 and have provided a notable service that has benefited the quality of life of the citizens of Newport News, especially for those receiving hospital care. The volunteers have provided services to our patients and team members in the spirit of the Riverside Mission: To care for others as we care for those we love.

Lifelong citizenship

Of the six volunteers, three are still actively volunteering at the hospital. Mary Howard Pulley, 94, said "I have no reason to stop volunteering. It makes you feel good, makes you feel like you are doing something for somebody that doesn't have as much."

Since moving to Newport News in 1958, William Banks, 91, has contributed and given back to this community through his volunteerism. Every Monday and Friday morning you can always count on seeing Bill at the volunteer station.

The third active volunteer Daniel Johnson, 91, says his philosophy is "Anyone that is physically capable should volunteer. I feel I've kept young blood in my veins through volunteering."

Louise Sears, 92, Gladys Wright, 90, Leona Durand, 90, served as volunteers at RRMC for a combined total of 70 years. Both Gladys and Leona were original members of the sewing group that makes small stuffed animals to give to the children in the hospital. Louise was a member of the Mended Hearts program that offers patient visits before and after heart surgery to answer questions and allay concerns for patients and their families.

Each of the volunteers are incredible role models that have truly made their mark, on not only the patients, but also the Riverside community. They exemplify the meaning of volunteering. Regardless of your age or physical ability, you can provide care to those in need and put others before yourself. Riverside Health System is proud to have these six remarkable individuals as volunteers and congratulates them on achieving the 2014 Lifelong Citizenship Award.
