Hospital is among only 74 programs in the nation to receive this honor in 2013

NASSAWADOX, Va. –May 2014 –Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital's cancer care program earned an Outstanding Achievement Award from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, a distinction received by only 74 of the 519 programs surveyed in 2013.

The Outstanding Achievement Award recognizes cancer programs that achieve excellence in providing highest quality care to cancer patients.

"This is important to our community and patients because it recognizes the high quality of services offered close to home," Dr. Susan McAndrews, Administrator at Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital, said.  "Right here on the Shore, you're getting the best of both worlds –state-of-the-art cancer treatment coupled with the care and attention of a small, community program.  The number of patients on the Shore who need cancer treatment is relatively small, thankfully, but our program's small size gives us the advantage of being able to really focus on our patients' needs. This award recognizes the superior services offered locally."

Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital was the only program in Virginia during 2013 to receive this award. Riverside Regional Medical Center and Riverside Walter Reed Hospital received the award in previous years.

When surveyed by the Commission on Cancer in the fall of 2013, the Cancer Center received Gold Standard Commendation status for earning commendations in seven out of seven possible commendation areas.  Those standards include access to clinical trials, clinical outcomes, data quality, advanced education of staff and cancer education efforts within the community.  To be recognized for advanced education of staff, one out of four oncology nurses must be properly trained and accredited.  At Riverside Shore Cancer Center, 100 percent of oncology nurses are oncology certified.  Riverside Shore was also commended for community outreach and awareness efforts, including participating in community events in which 84 people were screened for skin, breast or prostate cancer.

Early in 2014, programs that received Gold Standard Commendation in all seven standards were then considered for the Commission's Outstanding Achievement Award, which recognizes programs that have exceeded expectations in the seven areas.

For patients faced with a cancer diagnosis, choosing a Commission on Cancer Outstanding Achievement Award facility assures them they will receive:

  • Comprehensive care, including a complete range of state-of-the-art services and equipment
  • A multidisciplinary team approach to coordinate the best available treatment options
  • Information about ongoing cancer clinical trials and new treatment options
  • Access to prevention and early detection programs, cancer education and support services
  • A cancer registry that offers lifelong patient follow-up
  • Ongoing monitoring and improvements in cancer care
  • Quality care, close to home

"Earning accreditation means meeting some pretty rigorous standards, and receiving the Outstanding Achievement Award means we go above and beyond," said McAndrews. "Our cancer services demonstrate programmatic and clinical excellence along with impressive patient outcomes.

"It's never easy to hear, 'You have cancer.'  We never lose sight of that.  Here at Riverside Shore Cancer Center, we provide the latest evidence-based treatment according to national guidelines, but with a neighborly touch that only a small cancer center can provide," said Dr. Drury Stith, Cancer Committee Chairperson for Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital.

A full complement of cancer services are available at the Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital and Riverside Shore Cancer Center, including chemotherapy and infusion services, medical oncology (including cancer and hematology clinic), radiation therapy, nutrition counseling, support services and information library with Internet access.
