Gloucester, Va. — Grab a paddle and plastic ball to play one of the fastest growing sports in America at the Riverside Wellness and Fitness Center - Middle Peninsula.

Riverside’s Gloucester location recently introduced the sport to its members, which combines elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis.

“It’s very similar to a large game of ping-pong or a small game of tennis,” said Connor McNeil, Fitness Coordinator/Exercise Specialist at Riverside Wellness and Fitness Center – Middle Peninsula.

Players don’t need to cover as much court as tennis, and the net is eight inches lower. A beginner can pick up pickleball in just a few minutes. The oversized paddles make it easy to strike the perforated balls.

Riverside’s basketball courts convert easily for pickleball play.

“As long as the basketball courts are open, the game is open for you to play,” McNeil said.

Pickleball is an ideal sport for seniors who don’t want to run too much, but it can be fast-paced enough for any adult seeking a good workout. Games can be singles or doubles.

USA Pickleball reports more than 3.3 million players competing nationwide with the biggest number of core participants located in the South Atlantic, which includes Virginia.

Members and guests of the Riverside Wellness and Fitness Center – Middle Peninsula can reserve a court by stopping at the front desk or by calling 804-693-8888.
