Riverside offers a variety of classes and other programs for mothers-to-be and their support persons.

Expectant Parents Tour

Riverside Regional Medical Center- Newport News

Parents-to-be can preview the birthing rooms, delivery suites and nurseries at Riverside Regional Medical Center during our weekly Expectant Parents Tours. You’ll have the opportunity to meet our staff members, speak to one of our anesthesiologists and ask questions about having a baby at Riverside. The free tour lasts about an hour. Reservations required.

Big Brothers & Big Sisters Tour
For brothers- and sisters-to-be, this presentation is held in conjunction with the Expectant Parents Tour. The Big Brothers and Big Sisters program includes a story and demonstration of taking care of the new baby and a tour of where mother and baby will stay while in the hospital. Reservations required.

 Childbirth Preparation Course
These classes offer comprehensive information on pregnancy, labor and birth, as well as relaxation and breathing techniques. Mother-to-be and her partner explore the many choices available to make their birth experience personal and positive.

Dyna-Mom Exercise Program
Here's an easy, effective way to stay fit throughout pregnancy and the postpartum period. Moms-to-be and new moms with infants are included together to participate in this fun, safe, exercise class.

 Nutrition Counseling For Good Health
Proper nutrition is important throughout your life but especially crucial during pregnancy. Changes that occur in your body may require you to follow a specialized diet to better manage diabetes, high blood pressure or other conditions. Private nutrition counseling can teach you to follow new eating habits while, at the same time, to keep the "spice" in your life.

 Massage
A woman’s changing body during pregnancy is wonderfully natural. And yet, pregnancy by its very nature can add stress to the body. You’ll discover massage can relieve some common discomforts of pregnancy like aching muscles, backaches, swollen ankles, sciatica and fatigue.

 Baby Care Class
You are counting down the days to your baby's arrival. What an exciting time! In our 2-hour Baby Care Class, expectant patents will become familiar with many aspects of daily infant care.  Breastfeeding Class
Breastfeeding is natural, but there are skills to be learned that can help promote successful breastfeeding. In this 2-hour educational class, our Lactation Consultant will help familiarize expectant parents with the knowledge and skills they need to get Breastfeeding off to a great start.

 Preparation for Cesarean
This two hour class has been designed for the expectant couple who knows that their baby will be delivered by cesarean. In this class you will take a closer look into what to expect during a cesarean birth.

Comfort Measures
In this two hour class, you will learn a variety of comfort measures and coping techniques for labor. Measures and techniques to include: Releasing tension and relaxation, Breathing patterns, Positive labor positions, Use of a birthing ball, Dealing with back labor, Use of heat and cold, Visualization Role of the labor partner.  Please bring 3 pillows and a blanket or mat to this class.

Breastfeeding and Back to Work or School
For women who breastfeed and will be going back to work or school. Some samples of the topics included in class are as follows:
- Preparing to provide your milk to your baby once you return to work or school.
- Selecting the right type of breastpump for your needs.
- Tips on transitioning from breastfeeding to breastfeeding and pumping.
- Safe storing, refrigeration, freezing, transporting, thawing and feeding your milk to your baby.
- Scheduling
- Child Care
- Tips for maintaining and maximizing your milk supply after returning to work or school.
It is recommended that you take this class when you are pregnant. However, if you have a long maternity leave, you may choose to take this class after your baby is born, but by 4 weeks before you plan to return to work or school. You may bring your baby to class with you.

Grandparents Class
Grandparents-to-be are invited to join this 2 hour session to learn of changes affecting baby care today.  Please join us for topics covered as: Care of a Newborn, Changes in the role of grandparents, safety at home and car seat laws.  We will also take a tour of Labor and Delivery and the Women and Infant Care Unit.

Friends and Family Infant CPR
It's unlikely the need would arise, but if it did you would want to know exactly what to do.  This class, is designed for parents, grandparents, family members, friends and anyone else who might be caring for your baby.  It will tell you how to recognize the need for CPR.  Basic CPR and choking prevention will be presented.  No certification will be provided.

Infant Massage Class       
Our infant massage class is taught by certified educators of infant massage (CEIM) who are skilled in supporting new and seasoned parents in learning the art of baby massage.  Infant Massage offers many benefits to both your baby and you.  This class can be taken prior to delivery (using mannequins) or after babies arrival.  Recommended age for group classes is from birth to 12 months.

Support Groups
Riverside offers a variety of support groups for our community.  Two of our support groups are as follows.
Forget Me Not
A Perinatal Bereavement Support Group.
Our mission is to offer a safe and relaxed atmosphere while providing support to Mothers and Fathers as well as family and friends who have experienced a pregnancy loss or the loss of an infant.  We invite any individuals in the community to join our group at any time.
THIS IS A FREE SERVICE.
Postpartum Support Virginia
Peer Support Meeting information-We are a safe, healing space to share experiences, emotions and support.  Facilitated by local mother Diana McSpadden and RN, counselor.
The Pregnancy Mood Disorder Support Group meets in Newport News the evening of the first Tuesday of the month, and in Williamsburg the morning of the second Tuesday of the month. THIS IS A FREE SERVICE.

NEWPORT NEWS

When: Held 1st Tuesday of each month 7pm - 8:30pm (During holidays, please call to confirm.)
