Recovery and Rehabilitation

Recovery from hand or wrist surgery depends on the type of surgery performed, your overall health, and the cause of the hand condition.

Recovery at home
  • Your hand may be immobilized in a bandage or splint following surgery
  • Your hand may continue to be immobilized during the night, for months, after the procedure
  • Your surgeon may restrict your activities or work after the surgery
  • Physical and occupational therapy may be prescribed to increase strength and function of your hand

Physical therapy
Physical therapy at one of our outpatient facilities may be recommended. Therapy may include the following:
  • Exercises for the hand
  • Heat therapy
  • Massage therapy
  • Nerve stimulation
  • Desensitization following a hand nerve injury or trauma
  • Sensory re-education after nerve injury
  • Training in the performance of daily life skills using adapted methods and equipment

Riverside rehabilitation centers
Depending on your surgery, overall health and home situation, your doctor may recommend that you stay at one of our Riverside rehabilitation centers rather than home for the first few days of recovery. The advantages of a rehabilitation center are many. You'll have the experience of working with our physical therapists several times a day. You'll learn to navigate everyday living without re-injuring your joint. In addition, you will continue to be closely monitored by the medical staff.
