Back Pain Treatment in Hampton Roads

We think back surgery is a big deal . . .

That's why at the Riverside Health System, neurosurgeons, who are specialty trained in the complexities of operating on the brain and spine, perform back surgeries.

But before you have surgery, our neurosurgeons  will work with you on nonsurgical treatments to provide relief. And, if surgery is needed, our neurosurgeons can offer you the most advanced, minimally invasive surgical procedures available.

If you are experiencing intense back or leg pain that may also include numbness, call us today. Our office will be happy to help you with a referral from your regular physician, if your insurance requires one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why would a brain surgeon treat me for back pain?
When you hear "neurosurgeon," you probably think of brain surgery. But, neurosurgeons do so much more. While they diagnose and treat problems in the entire nervous system, much of their time is spent treating back, neck and spine conditions. That's why at Riverside, we say that our neurosurgeons have got your back.

It hurts, but it's only back pain—do I really need a neurosurgeon?
Your spinal column encloses all the nerves that travel through every part of your body. This bundle of nerves controls your all of your movements and can put you in pain when they become compressed or inflamed. With so much at stake, we believe that a neurosurgeon, who is specially trained to perform surgery on this delicate channel of nerves, is the specialist who should operate on your back.

But what about that "surgeon" part of neurosurgery?  Should I wait until I'm ready to have back surgery to see a neurosurgeon ?
A trip to a Riverside neurosurgeon doesn't necessarily mean that surgery is in your future. We see surgery as a last resort. Our physicians provide an entire range of non-surgical treatments to treat back pain. In fact, many of our patients get relief and never need surgery.

First, we'll listen to you and together come up with a plan that addresses your pain, its cause and take into account your treatment preferences. Physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medicines, ice, heat and supports are just some of the noninvasive treatments at your disposal when you consult one of our neurosurgeons.

I'm worried that I'll need surgery.
If you do need surgery, Riverside physicians are trained in the expanding field of minimally invasive surgery for the spine and back. Using advanced technology, we can operate on your back with an incision as small as inch, in some cases. Risks are reduced and your recovery time is shortened considerably over traditional surgery. While not suitable for every patient, it's important that your surgeon can offer you the option of state-of-the art minimally invasive surgery, if it's appropriate for your condition.
