Here's a No-Brainer about Strokes
A stroke occurs when there is bleeding in the brain or normal blood flow to the brain is blocked. Within minutes, brain cells start dying. Fast diagnosis and treatment of a stroke is critical in saving as much brain function as possible. Primary Stroke Center staff are specially trained to provide rapid diagnosis and lifesaving treatment.
There are many reasons why Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, Virginia is the clear choice for stroke care. In fact, the reasons for choosing Riverside are so compelling, some might say it’s a no-brainer.
No Brainer Reason #1
Largest team of stroke specialists on the Virginia Peninsula
The Riverside stroke care team includes 11 local neurologists and neurosurgeons, 30 specially trained emergency room doctors, and dozens of nursing and medical technicians, far more than any other hospital on the Peninsula. Available around the clock, our skilled physicians provide nearly immediate, highly specialized stroke care.
No Brainer Reason #3
In order to meet the high standards of the national Joint Commission, an independent body that oversees national certification of Primary Stroke Centers, Riverside devoted years of preparation, intense staff training and the addition of medical equipment dedicated to stroke care. We made this commitment to our community long ago and was the Peninsula's first hospital to be designated as a Primary Stroke Center.
No Brainer Reason #3
The Peninsula’s only accredited Emergency and Trauma Center
As the only accredited Emergency and Trauma Center on the Peninsula, Riverside Regional Medical Center is staffed around the clock with board-certified emergency and trauma physicians trained in the most advanced lifesaving stroke procedures. For instance, the staff can administer state-of-the-art hypothermic treatment, cooling the body to a lower temperature and reducing the amount of oxygen and nutrients needed by the brain. Demands for oxygen and nutrients are lowered in hope of limiting permanent brain damage while giving doctors more time to treat the patient.
No-Brainer Reason #4
Stroke care doesn't end in the emergency room or at Riverside Regional Medical Center. The Riverside Stroke Program includes all phases of post-stroke treatment. After a stroke, it is our goal to help each patient achieve his or her highest possible level of function and independence.
- Riverside Rehabilitation Institute provides comprehensive inpatient stroke rehabilitation.
- Riverside has eight convenient outpatient treatment centers that provide physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and psychological services.
- Riverside Home Care services are designed to bridge the transition from a hospital to home setting with services that include nursing, physical, occupational, and speech therapy.
No Brainer Reason #5
What local EMS personnel know that you don’t
Because Riverside Regional Medical Center is a nationally accredited Primary Stroke Center and because the chance of a good medical outcome is highest for patients treated at a stroke center, emergency medical personnel will often rush a potential stroke patient to a Primary Stroke Center like Riverside.
Because stroke is the third leading cause of death, in 2008, Governor Kaine signed a bill requiring Virginia communities and emergency service personnel to develop plans for providing stroke patients “appropriate, organized stroke care” as quickly as possible. We are a designated treatment facility for our community. If you have symptoms of a stroke, emergency medical personnel will have called ahead and our medical staff will be waiting for your arrival.
If you are having symptoms of a stroke, call 911 right away. Remember, fast, specialized care is crucial, so ask to be taken to Riverside.
