-
Your temperature and vital signs will be checked.
-
A nurse will start an IV by inserting a small needle in your vein, most likely in your arm. This is usually not painful and you will feel no more discomfort than when you give blood or have a blood test.
-
The nurse will start the infusion and the drugs will begin to travel into your bloodstream through the IV.
-
You may sit comfortably while the infusion takes place. Depending on what drug or combination of drugs your doctor prescribes, your infusion may take up to one hour.
-
If you experience any discomfort in the area of the IV or if you experience any side effects, it is important to tell the medical staff. They can slow down the rate at which your medicine is being administered or stop it entirely if necessary.
-
When you have received all of the prescribed medication, your vital signs will be checked and you may go home.
