Biological therapy is a relatively new type of treatment that works with your immune system to help fight cancer. It can also be used to help control side effects from other cancer treatments such as chemotherapy.
Your immune system helps protect you from getting infections and diseases including cancer. When your immune system works the way it should, it can tell the difference between normal cells and cancer cells. But sometimes this doesn't happen. The immune system may not always recognize the cancer cells as a threat, or, the immune system may not be working adequately to kill the cancer cells. That's where biological treatments come in. They are designed to repair, boost or enhance your immune system.
Doctors are doing research to learn why some immune systems don't fight off cancer. Researchers believe that biology treatments work to treat cancer in the following ways:
- Stop or slow the growth of cancer cells.
- Make it easier for your immune system to destroy, or get rid of, cancer cells.
- Keep cancer from spreading to other parts of your body
