Swim Lessons
We offer a variety of courses to help children and parents stay safe in and around the water. Below you can find descriptions of our classes, schedules and pricing. For additional information, call (757) 875-7525 ext. 305.
INFANT/TODDLER
Water Bugs
A program for parents and babies (6 to 18 months) to learn the correct safety techniques for water adaptation. Instructors work with each parent and baby in the water throughout the class to assist and ensure correct skill techniques are safely utilized. NOTE: One parent in the water at a time.
Water Skippers
A program for parents and toddlers (19 to 35 months) to learn the correct safety techniques for water adaptation and exploration. Instructors work with each parent and toddler in the water throughout the class to assist and ensure correct skill techniques are safely utilized. Level 1 skills will be introduced according to the toddler's comfort and capability. NOTE: One parent in the water at a time.
Swim diapers or rubber pants are required in Water Bugs and Skippers if not potty trained.
PRESCHOOL (AGES 3-5)
Sunfish
A program for parents and children to learn the correct safety techniques for water adaptation and exploration. Instructors work with each parent and child in the water throughout the class to assist and ensure correct skill techniques are safely utilized. Level 1 skills, along with safety skills will be the primary focus. As the child's confidence grows, parents may be asked to leave the pool for portions of class.
Tadpoles: Level 1
Children in this class use games and songs to learn basic water adjustment skills. The class consists of 45 minutes of instruction and 5 minutes of play time.
Otters: Level 2
Children in this class use games to learn the basic water skills. The class consists of 45 minutes of instruction and 5 minutes of play time.
Barracudas: Level 3
Children in this class use games to further develop basic water skills. The class consists of 45 minutes of instruction and 5 minutes of play time.
LEARN TO SWIM (AGES 6-13)
Beginner Swimmer
This class uses water exploration to orient participants to the aquatic environment and teach them elementary skills, which can be built on as they progress through the Learn to Swim program. Participants learn primary skills to build on the fundamental aquatic locomotion, safety and rescue skills. The skills taught for beginner swimmer include:
Level 1 – Water Exploration: Water adjustment, breath control, supported kicking, entering and exiting the pool independently and safety skills.
Level 2 – Fundamentals: Unsupported kicking, deep-water exploration, floating, gliding, combined stroke, rhythmic breathing and safety skills.
Advanced Beginner Swimmer
Class participants establish stroke readiness by building on the aquatic locomotion, safety and rescue skills presented in Beginner Swimmer. Further stroke development is gained by growing confidence and competency with additional guided practice of the skills presented in the Learn to Swim program. The skills taught for Advanced Beginner Swimmer include:
Level 3 – Stroke Development: Breath control with bobbing and rotary breathing, introduction to front crawl, introduction to back crawl, elementary backstroke, dolphin kick and more advanced safety skills.
Intermediate/Advanced Swimmer
Class participants coordinate and refine the keystrokes presented thus far in the Learn to Swim program. At this point, they will be introduced to the final strokes in the Learn to Swim Program (breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly) and are introduced to open turns. Additionally, participants polish strokes presented in previous levels, swim them with greater ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. The skills taught for intermediate swimmer include:
Level 4 – Stroke Improvement: Introduction to breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly, as well as turns and alternate kicks for treading water.
Level 5 – Stroke Refinement: Perform all strokes at increased distances with proficiency as well as combine diving skills with swimming.
Level 6—Skill Proficiency: This class reviews and perfects all strokes and skills presented at previous levels of the Learn to Swim program. It encourages good lifetime fitness habits, and teaches advanced rescue skills.
