NEW: Ekko Joins Our Therapy Staff

EkkoTherapyDogRRI

Ekko is a golden retriever mix donated to Riverside by Saint Francis Service Dogs and the first facility dog placed in the Hampton Roads Area by St. Francis Service Dogs. The Saint Francis Service Dogs program provides professionally trained dogs to people with a disability in order to assist them in living a more independent and self-sufficient life. People served by Riverside Rehabilitation Institute may have autism, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, stroke, rheumatoid arthritis, brain injury, amputations, paralysis or other disabling conditions.

Ekko was born on November 18, 2008 and was one of three puppies that were donated to the Saint Francis Service Dog program. Ekko was raised in the Bland Correctional Facility as part of the Saint Francis Prison Pup Program. Trained by Connie Kniseley, Ekko has a delightful temperament, friendly and outgoing. She will be an asset to our therapy department.

Inpatient Therapies and Services We Offer:

Admission
A patient's potential to benefit from rehabilitation services is the primary criteria used when determining admission to Riverside Rehabilitation Institute. Services are covered by most insurance carriers including Medicare, Medicaid, Blue Cross and many others. We will verify insurance benefits and pre-certify admissions prior to actual admission.

Referral and Assessment
Patients are accepted on a referral basis. Physicians, social workers, discharge planners, family members, or potential patients can refer individuals to Riverside Rehabilitation Institute. The Institute's Information and Admission Specialists can be reached by calling (757) 928-8000 or (800) 262-3019.

A free assessment is scheduled by the Information Specialists for potential patients. The assessment can be performed in another hospital where the individual is receiving medical care, in the patient's home, or wherever it is most convenient. The completed assessment is presented to the Medical Director of Riverside Rehabilitation Institute, a physiatrist (doctor of rehabilitation medicine) who evaluates the information and, if appropriate, approves the admission.

Often the assessment takes place on the same day as the referral call and it is the Institute's goal to complete the process within 24-hours, including the evaluation by the Medical Director.

Outpatient
Riverside Rehabilitation Institute offers comprehensive outpatient services. Outpatient Services are offered on the hospital campus at Shoreview Outpatient Clinic and our off-campus site in Williamsburg. Programs include:
