Our physicians partner in determining what kind of care you receive, not just case by case, but in a big-picture sense. Every hospital and division has a physician leader who works alongside operational leaders to set our course. That ensures that quality care is always front and center.
"I fell in love with geriatric care. I still get to take care of the whole family. I get to help the children who worry about mom and dad. It's still family medicine."
Dr. Emmeline Gasink
Dr. Gasink sees it as an advantage that she grew up in Southeastern Virginia. "I know every doctor from Virginia Beach to Richmond," she said. "I would only send you where I would send my parents."
She's come a long way as a physician leader since coming to Riverside as a resident in 2004. Dr. Gasink currently serves as director of quality for Riverside's Lifelong Health division. She is also the chairperson of both the lifelong health and Riverside Medical Group Quality Committees. The crossover has been helpful. "It allows me to make sure the medical group is aware of all the transition issues," Dr. Gasink said. Transitions would include communication between nursing home and physician office, for example. Getting it right is crucial for patients and families.
Dr. Gasink grew up in Virginia Beach. She earned her medical degree at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk and completed a residency at Riverside Regional Medical Center. She practiced family medicine for several years but now specializes in geriatrics, or care of the elderly. All her patients are age 65 and up.
Dr. Gasink serves as medical director for Warwick Forest, a continuing care retirement community in Newport News. "Dementia care is something that I really enjoy," she said.
