Prostatis: Can sexual activity make it worse?

Answer

You don't necessarily have to avoid sex if you have prostatitis — an infection or inflammation of the prostate gland. Typically, prostatitis isn't made worse by sexual activity. However, some men with prostatitis may experience pain with ejaculation or sexual intercourse.

Treatment of the underlying prostatitis is important in relieving such symptoms. To relieve pain associated with prostatitis, try soaking in a warm bath. Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as aspirin or ibuprofen, also may help.

However, if sex is too painful, you may consider abstaining from sexual activity until your prostatitis symptoms improve. Also, if prostatitis is due to a sexually transmitted infection, you should avoid sex until treatment is completed to avoid transmission to your partner.

Consult your doctor if you have other signs or symptoms with painful intercourse, such as bleeding, genital lesions or abnormal discharge from your penis.
