Back pain: When is surgery an option?

Surgery for low back pain is rarely needed. In fact, surgery for low back pain is usually considered a last resort. It's typically reserved for severe or unrelenting pain that doesn't respond to other treatment or progressive muscle weakness caused by nerve compression.
