Be sure to write it down
I've had issues with weight over the past few years and I finally found something that really helps. Part of my challenge was just paying more attention to what I ate so I could at least try and balance out the good and the not-so-good. When I started out I wrote down everything I ate for a week. Then I compared what I recorded with recommendations that I got from the Mayo.com health library. At first I tracked the total calories and fat intake. I still keep a log, but by now I have a pretty good idea of what's what in terms of nutritional value and portions. So my documentation isn't completely scientific now but what I still think is true is that if you write it down you won't forget what you had on any given day and you won't be able kid yourself about what you're eating.
