Daniel Ballin on the Medical Fitness Difference
Learn about the difference between fitness and medical fitness
Whether you're a long-time team member or have worked for Riverside for just a short period, you probably know that we own and operate two Wellness and Fitness Centers, one in the Newport News area and the other in Gloucester. Long before the buzzwords of "preventive medicine" were popularized, Riverside recognized the value of keeping our employees and their families fit and healthy. The Riverside facilities and their specially trained and experienced staff accomplish that goal in an atmosphere that is more medically oriented than merely gym oriented. What's the difference between those two approaches?
It lies in the fact that the Riverside Centers offer a full array of options for our members centered on improving their overall health and well-being. To start, we have a physical therapy clinic located within our Newport News facility and on the campus of our Gloucester location. As a member, you can receive free health screenings for any injury you may have by one of our therapists who can then guide you in the right direction with regards to taking care of your medical – not just your fitness – needs.
With a referral from a physician you can also join our R.I.S.E. program (Rehabilitative Introduction to Supervised Exercise) where we have exercise physiologists on staff to help you with a specific exercise prescription. In addition, for a more in-depth and personalized approach to your program, you can arrange to work with one of our certified personal trainers to take you to the next level.
Once you're participating in an exercise regimen, you have the opportunity to meet with a registered dietician (RD) who can help you add to the rewards of your program through better nutritional choices and supplementation. The incentive for working with an RD is that you'll be far less likely to waste all that disciplined work in the gym with a bad diet. We also offer body composition analysis to help you stay motivated as you convert fat to muscle. This is a time when your scale at home tells you that you haven't lost a pound, when in fact you have improved your health and revved up your metabolism with a change in your body make up.
The Medical Fitness Difference is something we believe in very strongly and our hope is to share its benefits with even more Riverside team members. As part of that effort, as a way to complement our low employee rate of $22 a month, and in honor of Medical Fitness Week April 15-21, we are making it possible for all Riverside employees to use our centers for free during that week of April 15-21. Just show your badge, fill out a release form and enjoy all the exceptional resources of our wonderful Wellness Centers. I promise - you will not regret it. I hope to see you all there, and don't forget to stop by and say hi to me if you are working out in the Newport News center.
Stay healthy and medically fit my friends!
