Health Talk: The Doctor is In
The Doctor is In is an informative health lecture series sponsored by Riverside Medical Group and held in the Food Court of Patrick Henry Mall on the last Wednesday of each month. The Doctor is In offers community residents an interesting and relevant discussion of health topics that are of special interest to older adults and women. Each of the lectures is led by a different Riverside Medical Group physician with extensive knowledge and clinical expertise around the topic being discussed. The lectures also include a question and answer period to give you and other attendees a chance to expand on some of the health issues raised and share personal experiences. Bring a friend, a family member or a neighbor and take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about a wide range of health issues and concerns while you sip on complimentary Starbucks coffee. Career Training

Medical Terminology Course
This is a great beginner course to take on your career path as a coder, and also serves equally well as a refresher for all health information management professionals. This seven-week course focuses on many components of medical terms that you can decipher by simply knowing the meaning of the prefix or suffix. By learning the individual parts of a medical word, you will not need to memorize hundreds of complex medical terms and their definitions. This course is offered by Riverside Medical Group.

Grief and Loss Course
Riverside Hospice offers a free 7-week course entitled "Understanding Your Grief: Ten Essential Touchstones for Finding Hope and Healing Your Heart." The course draws from material written by renowned grief counselor and educator Alan Wolfelt, PhD. Course topics include: Open to the Presence of Your Loss; Dispel the Misconceptions About Grief; Embrace the Uniqueness of Your Grief; Explore Your Feelings of Loss; Recognize You Are Not Crazy; Understand the Six Needs of Mourning; Nurture Yourself; Reach Out for Help; Seek Reconciliation, Not Resolution; and Appreciate Your Transformation. A book will be provided which the participants may choose to purchase or return at the end of the study. The group is for adults (18 years and up) who have experienced the death of another adult in their life. It is also for those whose loss has been during the previous three and 12 months. Advance pre-registration is required to attend this series of group sessions.

Individual Nutrition Counseling
Take the first step toward a healthier you! Let our dietitians provide you with up-to-date nutrition information and show you how to eat for optimum weight and good health. Sessions include Wellness Weigh notebook with over 200 pages of information including lowfat recipes, shopping lists, sample menus and tips for dining out. Have your body composition calculated. Receive food and exercise diaries to maximize learning and behavior change.

Massage Therapy

Medical Nutrition Therapy - Gloucester
Medical nutrition therapy will teach you more about planning meals, controlling portions, snacks, recipe modifications and reading food labels. Sessions are particularly helpful for people with diabetes, gestational diabetes, pre-renal conditions and cardiac concerns. Initial sessions are usually one hour in length; follow-up sessions are 30 minutes to one hour. A physician referral or prescription is needed prior to setting up your appointment with the registered dietitian.

Medical Nutrition Therapy - Newport News
Outpatient nutrition sessions with a Registered Dietitian are available for patients with weight management, cardiac, pre-renal, oncology, gestational diabetes, tube feeding, and/or TPN concerns. Patients will gain knowledge on nutrition and meal planning based on their individual needs. One hour initial sessions and « hour to one-hour follow-up sessions are available. Group sessions are also available. A completed Outpatient Medical Nutrition Therapy Referral Form is needed prior to setting up an appointment.

Prediabetes Class for Patients
This weekly class is especially for patients who are at risk for developing diabetes. The class will show participants the roles that lifestyle, exercise, nutrition and pathophysiology play in managing their prediabetes. Participants will learn about risk factors and setting goals for their health. Patients must have a physician referral or prescription to attend this class.

Breastfeeding Support Group

Mended Hearts Support Group
The Mended Hearts Chapter 113 is a volunteer group that is part of the national Mended Hearts organization and is made up of heart patients, their caregivers and healthcare professionals interested in helping heart patients and their families. This non-profit group is closely affiliated with the American Heart Association and meets monthly. This dedicated group of individuals provides on-going support for cardiac patients through personal visits and educational programs.

Multiple Sclerosis Disease Self Help Group
The Multiple Sclerosis Disease Self Help Group meets the first Wednesday of each month. Lloyd, MD, Neurology physician with Riverside Medical Group, will give a talk on "What you need to know about the new immunomodulator drugs."
