Riverside Medical Group Physicians Earn Elite Heart/Stroke Recognition

Twenty-six of Twenty-seven Physicians Recognized in the Commonwealth of Virginia are Riverside Medical Group Physicians

NCQA Heart/Stroke AwardTwenty-six Riverside Medical Group physicians recently earned recognition by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) for delivery of quality cardiovascular and cerebrovascular care. The Heart/Stroke Recognition Program (HSRP), created by the NCQA, the American Heart Association, and the American Stroke Association, awards recognition to physicians who demonstrate high quality in providing care to patients with heart or vascular conditions or who have had a stroke. Twenty-six of the twenty-seven physicians recognized in the Commonwealth of Virginia are physicians in Riverside Medical Group. In addition to recognizing physicians who deliver quality cardiovascular and stroke treatment, the HSRP was also designed to improve the quality of care that stroke and heart disease patients receive.

This designation provides a benchmark for the treatment and assessment of cardiovascular and stroke related illnesses. Originally launched in 2003, 1238 physicians have obtained the HSRP distinction in the United States. This voluntary program ensures patients that they are receiving the highest-level, evidence-based heart/stroke care from the recognized physicians.

To receive recognition, which is valid for three years, data was submitted demonstrating performance that meets the program's key cardiovascular and stroke care measures. Physicians are required to complete an application packet, identify a patient sample of 25-35 patients, pull data from the medical record and enter it in a worksheet that evaluates the physician’s performance on the following measures: blood pressure control; complete lipid profile; cholesterol control; use of aspirin or similar anti-clotting drugs; asking patients if they smoke, and advising them to quit, if they do.

More than 75 million Americans have one or more types of cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, responsible for approximately 870,000 deaths each year. Stroke is the third-leading cause of death and a leading cause of severe, long-term disability in the United States and in Virginia. Approximately 4,000 people in the Commonwealth of Virginia die from stroke each year. Despite well-accepted evidence that controlling blood pressure, reducing cholesterol levels, using aspirin, and quitting smoking can reduce further health problems, many heart disease and stroke patients are not treated effectively.

“Virginia’s stroke mortality ranks 39th compared to other states in the Union,” said Dr. Charles O. Frazier, Riverside’s Director of Medical Informatics. “I believe that we can help bring Virginia’s death rate from stroke and heart disease below the national average, if we consistently apply the treatments supported by the medical evidence. This recognition indicates that our physicians are doing that.”
